When he was in school, he was very interested in astronomy, and he wants his band, Muse, to be the first band to play in space. He is musically inclined, and plays classical piano and guitar in his free time. He has a speech impediment called Rhotacism (also known as Elmer Fudd Syndrome) where he pronounces his r's like w's (pwoper, pwomise, pwease, weally, etc.) he is well aware of this, and doesn't like it when people point it out in a mean way, or react weirdly to it.

Matthew showed his metamorphmagus abilities early on, his features changed involuntarily until he settled on his current appearance. Matthew has since mastered the ability, and is able to control his hair when around muggles. When he was 15, he met his best friends, and band mates, Dom Howard and Chris Wolstenholme. Together, they are one of the most popular bands, in both the muggle and wizarding worlds today, Muse.

When Matthew was 22, he had a child with his then girlfriend, Kate, named Clara. Kate took off after having Clara, as she was a muggle, and was unaware of Matt's wizarding abilities. When she saw Clara change via her metamorphmagus abilities, she thought she had gone insane, and ran away. Now Clara is 17 and attends Hogwarts.
